The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) has moved to calm growing public concern surrounding the relocation and development of a new market, as discussions intensify over the fate of the abandoned Anafo Market project.

Speaking on The Workshop with Sir Roy on TW Radio, the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Patrick Yeboah Hayford, addressed concerns raised by residents and traders regarding the stalled Anafo Market, which was initiated under a previous administration. The issue has sparked debate across Cape Coast, with many questioning the decision to shift focus toward a new market project under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

Mr. Hayford explained that the Assembly is fully aware of the concerns being raised and is taking steps to ensure transparency in the decision-making process. He noted that while the Anafo Market remains incomplete, the government’s broader economic agenda has necessitated a fresh approach to market infrastructure—one that aligns with modern trading demands and supports extended business hours.

Clarifying rumors surrounding the newly selected site, Mr. Hayford firmly dismissed claims suggesting that the area is subject to any form of security restriction. He assured residents and traders that the location is accessible and safe for commercial activities.

“The public should not have any fears about the new site. There are no security barriers or restrictions that would prevent traders or residents from accessing the area,” he emphasized during the interview.

The clarification comes at a time when speculation has been rife, particularly among traders who depend heavily on market accessibility and security for their livelihoods. Many had expressed uncertainty about whether the new location would be viable for daily operations.

Mr. Hayford further indicated that the Assembly remains committed to engaging stakeholders, including traders and community members, to ensure that their concerns are addressed as the project progresses. He stressed that the ultimate goal is to provide a more functional and economically beneficial trading environment for the people of Cape Coast.

The discussion has reignited calls for accountability regarding the abandoned Anafo Market, with some residents urging the Assembly to provide a clear update on its status and the resources already invested in the project.

As plans for the new market unfold, all eyes remain on the Assembly to balance ongoing development with public expectations, ensuring that the transition ultimately benefits the local economy and the livelihoods of traders across the metropolis.
