More than 9,700 Mobile Money agent SIM cards have been blocked across the country by MTN Ghana over alleged breaches of sections 4 and 7 of its Mobile Money application terms, sparking concern among agents and customers alike.
The affected agents say they received notifications on Monday, April 14, 2026, informing them of the alleged violations before their SIM cards were subsequently deactivated. The sudden action has disrupted operations for thousands of agents who rely on the platform for daily transactions.
In interviews with TW News, some agents, including those in Cape Coast, expressed frustration over what they describe as a lack of clear communication from the telecom company. Several indicated that attempts to seek clarification from MTN have yielded little response, with some reportedly being advised to obtain a court order to resolve the issue.
The mass blocking has had a ripple effect on mobile money services nationwide, as many customers depend on agents for essential financial transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, and bill payments. In some areas, the disruption has led to long queues at the few operational agent points and delays in accessing funds.
While MTN Ghana has yet to issue an official public statement detailing the specific nature of the violations under sections 4 and 7, industry observers suggest the action could be linked to compliance concerns, including transaction irregularities or breaches of operational guidelines.
Affected agents are now calling for urgent engagement with MTN to clarify the reasons behind the blocks and to outline a clear pathway for resolution. They argue that restoring the affected SIM cards is critical not only for their livelihoods but also for maintaining the reliability of mobile money services in Ghana’s largely cash-lite economy. The situation remains unresolved as stakeholders await an official response from MTN Ghana.
